Gay bars with international clientele in Shinjuku Ni-Chome:
Bacchus's Note: There are more than 200 (mostly very small) gay bars in Shinjuku Ni-Chome alone. There are still more gay bars in other parts of Tokyo too. But somehow most of non-Japanese gay men and Japanese gay men who like them seem to go only to "non-Japanese ghetto bars" or "gaisen bars" listed below. Some non-Japanese guys attribute it to the xenophobia on the Japanese bars' side. But actually, it is because of cultural differences and is bilateral. (1) At Japanese bars, bartenders often try to entertain the guests by talking to them.... in Japanese. Unless you are fluent OR are willing to soak yourself in the Japanese conversation you don't understand, you will definitely feel uncomfortable there. (2) At Japanese bars, you get some food that you have never ordered when you sit down at the counter or at a table. It's called otooshi, tsukidashi, or charm. You don't want to pay for something you haven't ordered, right? But some Japanese guests at those Japanese bars are really looking forward to this small food they get every time they visit the bar. The food usually changes every day (unless it's kawakimono or dry snack). And it is generally believed in Japan that it is unhealthy to drink without eating. But if you are so used to paying only 2 and a half bucks for a bottle of Bud, it sounds like a rip-off, eh? There! It's cultural differences.
A Japanese bar. Beware! You'll definitely get otooshi. But they usually have multilingual bartenders who speak Japanese, Korean, Japanese Sign Language, (maybe English,) etc.
Lapis
Hiroshi, tha master does not speak English. But it's a very cozy bar with diverse cocktails including Blue China. He usually serves otooshi, but if you are a non-Japanese guy, you might not get the otooshi unless you ask for it. He knows the cultural differences.
Bars with international clientele in other parts of Tokyo and in Narita/NRT:
It's a bar for everybody! (You can say it's mixed.....) Its general manager is the super star Patrick. He is there from 8 to 5.
Truck Stop (NRT!!!!!)
A mixed bar at NRT!!!!! Very cruisy. On the national road (not highway) right in front of the ANA hotel. Many cute flight attendants.
Cage/Furusato (NRT!!!!!)
It's a non-gay karaoke pub/izakaya frequented by gay flight attendants. It's near Keisei Narita Station. It's between the station and Hotel Let's.
Flyer's Lounge 2 (NRT!!!!!)
It's a non-gay bar between JR Narita Station and Shinshoji Temple. Lots of gay flight attendants, especially from NYC.
My favorite restaurants:
Ghiottone, Ikebukuro
Behind Marui Department Store.--
A (non-gay) Italian restaurant. Try Penne with Gorgonzola
cheese sauce. (Don't say it's Macaroni and Cheese! It's a no-no.)
Las Chicas, Jingumae 5-47-6, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0001;
Phone 3407-6865, Fax 3400-5060
Go to Subway Omotesando Station. Walk on Aoyama Dori
Street toward Shibuya. You'll find Kinokuniya International
Super Market on the right-hand side. Keep on going. You'll get
to a no-name T-shaped intersection. Then you'll find Citibank
on the right-hand side. Turn right on the alley right before the
Citibank. (Note on April 26, 2001: The Citibank is gone!!!! I forgot what you can look for to find the alley last time I went to Tokyo. It's an alley before you get to the United Nation's University. Better call them if you have a handy phone.) In a few minutes, you'll find Las Chicas on the left-hand
side.--This is not a gay restaurant. But many of the waitrons are gay.
The primary language spoken here is English. The food is okay.
You come here for the atmosphere. Far away from Shinjuku
Ni-Chome, but if you're considering a date in a non-Japanese
atmosphere, this is a good place for you.
Pepe Rosso, Naka-Meguro
A very authentic (non-gay) Italian restaurant. But the menu
and the day's recommendation on blackboards are written in
Japanese. Take your Japanese boyfriend along if you don't read
Japanese.
Aux Bacchanales, Harajuku
A French cafe frequented by non-Japanese guests. Its T-room seems to be cruisy. It is referred to as oobaka or a great fool by some Japanese people.
If you are planning to visit AYOR locations for sex, read this note
below. Japanese policemen usually do not harass guys having sex in
the T-room (cottage, toilet for cruising) stalls. But you still have to be careful. It's because of
"pro(fessional)s" and gay-bashers. Pros come in two types. One is
middle-aged ex-yakuzas who extort money by blackmailing those who
come to T-rooms. Another is young unidentifying hustlers who demand
money after having sex. No negotiation is made beforehand. They
extort money from their baffled johns afterwards by blackmailing. And
gay-bashers are not unheard of at Japanese parks. Brutal homicides
have been reported especially at Komazawa Koen Park. So watch
your steps and proceed AYOR.
I have some more preliminary pieces of information here. For other
sex clubs and saunas, refer to
http://www.cruisingforsex.com/. As soon as I get the details as
for directions and the actual status of admittance of non-Japanese
guests, I'll send them off to the CruiseMaster there.
Before the information is posted there, refer to the BAdi magazine's
ad pages in the back if you read Japanese.
Ueno 24 Kaikan
11-storey gay sauna in Tokyo with international clientele. Diverse crowd. Go to Subway Hibiya Line Iriya Station. Go up to the ground level. You'll see the ramp of the Metropolitan Highway (Shuto Kosoku) toward Ueno. Walk to the left of the ramp. And then you'll see the 11-storey 24 Kaikan with signs which can be read "24." Once you know the ways araund, it is in a walking distance from JR Ueno Station too.
Jin-ya, Ikebukuro
A small sauna which admit non-Japanese guests.
Paragon, Lily Mansion 1F, Shinjuku 2-17-4, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
Non-Japanese guests are admitted if they speak and understand
Japanese and if they are not too old or too out-of-shape.
Dragon, Leben/Loewen(??) F104, Kita Shinjuku 1-6-9, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
Asians are admitted. It's a sex club in North Shinjuku. Not to
be confused with the "Dragon," the dance club in Shinjuku 2-Chome.
HX, south of Shinjuku 2-Chome
Go to Nakadori (Central) street in Shinjuku 2-Chome. Nakadori street has the most gay bookstores in the area. Go to the north on the street and you'll soon find Yasukuni Dori street. Cross the Yasukuni Dori street and then you'll find a MOS Burger hamburger shop to your left. Turn right on the alley right before the MOS Burger. HX is located on the first floor of a regular residential (manshon) apartment building. And its name "HX" is written very small and the place is very dimly lit. Non-Japanese guests are admitted if they are not too old. Seems
like it's a very hot place. (But you
have to be butch and wear your hair short and be of the G-Men type.
Even I was refused entrance.)
GHQ
A sister sex club of HX.
Dobermann in Akabane, Kita-Ku
Non-Japanese guests are welcome.
Sky Gym; Rashinton Palace 10F, Shinjuku 2-5-12, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
